The Workshop “Development of simulation by GPU for the study of quark-hadron matter at high temperature and densities” was held on 21-22 November 2018 at Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University, the participants included Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok).

Project outline:

The project aims to train specialists that will be able to play the leading roles in nuclear and particle physics and related research areas by conducting discussions on the properties of matter at extreme conditions (ultrahigh densities and temperatures), which is an important and challenging topic of research in nuclear and particle physics. On this occasion, a workshop was held on topics of importance for prospective studies, particularly by young researchers. It included introductory talks by experts and research presentations by graduate students. The workshop program also comprised a presentation on the know-how in operating the supercomputer owned by Osaka University and available for shared use. An invited lecturer from the Osaka University Cybermedia Center shared his unique expertise in the efficient use of the supercomputer.

One hour was allocated for each lecture, which allowed plenty of time for discussion, rarely available at such workshops. Addressed with numerous questions by the young researchers, the lecturers provided clear explanations and advice on future research, and the participants exchanged views on the topics raised. The experts also offered valuable comments on the presentations by young researchers, containing suggestions on possible directions of their future research.

The participating labs of Osaka University and Far Eastern Federal University have a long history of successful collaboration, but this workshop was the first occasion for the participants to exchange views with respect to the premises and future prospects of their research. With four guests from Vladivostok, the participants discussed not only the research topics but also the research environment and the social situation in their respective countries. This frank exchange of views will undoubtedly contribute to further development of the academic collaboration between the universities. One of the graduate students from Far Eastern Federal University has developed an advanced concept and technology for conducting high-performance computing with the limited resources of his laboratory. We expect that the use of the high-performance computer owned by Osaka University will lead to substantial progress in the implementation of this proposal.

As part of the ongoing academic collaboration, three faculty members of Osaka University will visit Vladivostok at the end of January 2019, where they will meet their counterparts and graduate students.
