International Conference “Russian Language Education in Japan: Native Language, Heritage Language and Foreign Language: Experience, Issues and Perspectives of the Young Generation” co-hosted by HaRP

On February 6 (Sat.) and 7 (Sun.), 2021, the Research Faculty of Media and Communication of Hokkaido University, HaRP, and Japanese Society for Russian Language Education held the international conference “Russian Language Education in Japan: Native Language, Heritage Language and Foreign Language – Experience, Issues and Perspectives of the Young Generation”.

The international conference, which was held online, gathered over 120 participants on February 6 and over 130 participants February 7from universities, secondary and upper secondary schools and other organizations of Japan, Russia, and other countries. 2 undergraduate students, 3 graduate students and 5 faculty members of Japanese and Russian universities, as well as 3 representatives of NGOs involved in the Russian language education made presentations on their research. Furthermore, experts in the Russian language education not only from Japan and Russia, but also from the United States and Finland delivered their keynote speeches.

Following the speeches, the Russian language education issues and further research directions were discussed from the perspectives of teachers, trainees, parents, and learners.

We believe this conference contributed to expanding the network of Japanese universities involved in the Russian language education and the ongoing efforts at training specialists in this area. We also hope it helped students to deepen the understanding of the multicultural world through language, which is an important part of international human resource development.
