International Winter School “Environment and Innovation of the North” held at North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk on 21 February – 2 March 2019

On 21 February – 2 March 2019 the international Winter School “Environment and Innovation of the North” was held at North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk.

Participants:

From Japan: Hokkaido University (4), other Japanese universities (4), research institute (1), companies (1), 9 in total. From Russia: 5 students from North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk.

Lecturers:

Specialists from the following institutions delivered lectures at the winter school: Hokkaido University (1), National Institute of Polar Research (Japan), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) (1), Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok (1), North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk (6), research institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1).

Summary:

Apart from the lectures, the the program of the winter school comprised tours of the Mammoth Museum (Yakutsk), Kingdom Permafrost museum (Yakutsk), the Museum of History and Culture of the People of the North (Yakutsk), along with visits to the Experimental forest station of the Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBPC SB RAS), and the ice road running over the frozen river.

On the last day of the winter school a workshop on “Environment and Innovation of the North” was held. The participants divided into 3 groups and made presentations on the use of technology in the Arctic with due consideration of the interests of the indigenous peoples of the North and the role of connectivity.
